Artist's musings

It’s been a very busy month! I landed the role of an apostle in the upcoming musical “Jesus Christ Superstar.” The one thing that amazes me is that we’re doing ACTUAL DANCING in this one. Energetic dancing at that – I’ve never hurt so much in a play before, but I’m hoping the sore muscles, aches and pains will go away the more we do it (hey, it’s exercise LOL). I’ll post more about the show as time approaches. Opening night is February 3rd, so make your plans to be at the CEC Theatre in Columbia, MO!

Saturday, October 23, 2010 (Day Two)

Today was the biggest day of the convention as far as activities and celebrities go. We were slated for Casey Biggs, Jeffrey Combs, Marc Alaimo, Armin Shimerman, Max Grodenchik and Vaughn Armstrong for the entire day. Needless to say I was in heaven, especially about meeting Marc Alaimo and Armin Shimerman because these two actors have had the most impact on me. Marc Alaimo moreso because he has that commanding and unmistakable voice, and a certain machismo that just sucks me in (yes I be crushing on that Cardassian).

We were treated to an auction of various Sci-Fi items and I was fortunate enough to snag a 4-piece TNG plate set made by the Hamilton Collection (Picard, Data, Worf and a plate with various characters). I missed out on a set of autographs that had Matt Frewer and Adrien Paul in them, damnit! There’s always tomorrow, hopefully!

We then had the autograph session with the actors (except for Max Grodenchik, who remained a separate entity for the entire weekend). Zoe was able to snag some sweet lines from the actors (as I thought she would) in her autograph book. I got a couple of great lines as well, but she made out like a bandit! I even mentioned that while she was getting her autograph from Vaughn Armstrong about how she can get these guys to write lengthy tomes in her book. Vaughn wrote “I love you” in mine which was such a hoot, then he wrote the same thing for another fan and I quipped “Well now I’m not special anymore” which got a laugh from both Vaughn and Armin.

Armin had asked us where we were from and when we told him he said he had a friend who lived in Missouri and mentioned the town of Mammoth Springs, but I told him that was in Arkansas. He told me he was surprised anyone knew where that town was because it was so small, and mentioned an actress who was from there (the name escapes me now). I told him that I was in such awe of him and that I grew up watching him on “Beauty and the Beast.” He then told me a story about during his run on that show he skipped a day to do this small part on the TNG episode “Haven” and that the producers couldn’t believe that he would jeopardize his part on Beauty and the Beast to do this role. This role led to another role on TNG (“The Last Outpost” – one of the more awful episodes) and he ultimately landed the role of Quark on DS9. Once we finished up with the autographs we made a mad dash back up to the room to change for the next event. Zoe and I went all out dressing up in formal wear. Hey, it was a party, and by golly you dress up for a party!

Being Gold weekend pass holders allowed us to go to an exclusive Dessert party where these fine actors mentioned above would all be attending. Zoe was thrilled because she got to gorge herself on ice cream, cake and pie. I let slip the chance to say something to Marc twice now, and had made up my mind that I’m not going to let that happen for a third time.

The guests of honor arrived around 10pm to a regalia of applause, then they all separated and came to visit everyone at their tables. Armin Shimerman was the first one to sit down and visit with us – he is such an articulate man and has a distinct presence about him. Jeffrey Combs was next – he is such a goofball! He had so much fun teasing Zoe and she just ate it up! Casey Biggs is another actor who has a very commanding presence about him, so funny and talented as well. Vaughn Armstrong was so down to earth chit chatting about farming and things.

Marc Alaimo. Oh.. my… goodness. He was standing up at the table and I said “Come on in, pull up a chair!” He sat down with his drink and began chatting with us. Once there was a break in the conversation, I took the opportunity to speak what was on my mind:

“I have to tell you, we saw you last night as we were leaving the auditorium, but I couldn’t approach you because I was in such awe.” He said he was touched by that. I continued on saying “Your character Gul Dukat really (pause due to total awe and loss of words, then touched my heart) got to me and I have to tell you, you make a bad guy look so damned good!” He laughed at that – he has one of the greatest laughs and greatest smiles. And yes that last statement of mine was a total flirt – I couldn’t help myself!

He then asked us where he was from, and when we told him he said that his wife was from Cape Girardeau (they’re newlyweds), and then proceeded to tell me that I reminded him of her, short brown hair, pretty (blush). It was really such a sweet conversation, that one exchange between he and I was the absolute highlight of the entire convention for me. He was the only actor who stuck around for any length of time, it was such an honor. I think if I had gotten a hug from this man that would have done me in – they would have had to scrape me up from the floor.

Last to sit at our table was Max Grodenchik. He sat right next to me which was really cool, and chatted back and forth. He had asked if there was something about the convention we could change what was it, and someone had said “more time with the celebrities.” All the celebs had handlers, for lack of a better term, and kept a close eye on the time in order to move them along as quickly as possible. It was cute how he was talking about the tap was just a suggestion, and then he tapped me on the shoulder, and that it would be different if they were to grab him by his arm, and he grabbed my arm and gave it a tug.

As we were leaving the party, Casey Biggs left with us and said “I can’t believe she stayed up that late.” I quipped “I know, it’s even past my bedtime!” It was such a wonderfully rememberable evening. I’ll never forget it!

Thursday, October 21, 2010 (Convention Eve)

We took off from Columbia around 10am, went through a mound of road construction, heavy traffic, and idiot drivers, and finally wound up in Chicago around 4:30pm. We checked into the Westin, I hauled all of our gear out of the car, into the elevator and up to the 11th floor.

Throughout the evening we talked about how cool it’s going to be to meet all of these actors and get their autographs. Zoe was particularly excited about Leonard Nimoy and Christopher Lloyd, whereas I was particularly excited about all of them because I grew up watching many of these actors on TV and in movies, and they’ve all touched my life in one way or another. Our night finally drew to a close around midnight, though it was hard for me to get to sleep.

Friday, October 22, 2010 (Day One)

We hit our first and only snag in the convention: Leonard Nimoy was not able to attend due to a minor medical issue which required surgery approximately 36 hours before he was to take the stage. Of course we were bummed out by that – Leonard was the main reason we came to the convention, but we were completely understanding that things like this happen and we just take it in stride. I cannot say that for the folks in line ahead of us who were pissed off and thought that even though they purchased Gold Weekend passes that they should get a refund or a credit on Mr Nimoy’s autograph (note: Gold weekend passes allow folks to get complimentary autographs from many of the stars attending the convention). I paid for Gold weekend passes as well, but knew the risks involved with stars not being able to show and there are disclaimers on the Creation Entertainment website stating as such. That’s my only gripe from the entire weekend.

Barbara March & Gwynyth Walsh

Barbara March & Gwynyth Walsh took the stage first and told stories about when they played Lursa & B’Etor and everything that was involved with it. Zoe liked meeting them because they played pretty strong female characters. I had never met actors before so I was at a bit of a loss on what to say, so I let Zoe do all the talking.

Armin ShimermanTaking Leonard’s place that evening was Armin Shimerman. He was very gracious in speaking with the audience, and even shelled out a Shakespeare piece that he would use in auditions. I had no idea that he was classically trained, and it was a real treat to see that performance.
Photobucket

As we were leaving the auditorium, I happened to see Marc Alaimo hanging out around the registration table. I am in complete and total awe of this man so I just stood there and watched him for a brief moment before Zoe dragged me back upstairs. More on that in the next installment.

The Rat Pack show was a true highlight of the evening – I tell you they could have gone on all night and no one would have moved. The Rat Pack, comprised of Armin Shimerman, Max Grodenchik, Casey Biggs, Jeffrey Combs and Vaughn Armstrong, all very dapper in their tuxedos, had the crowd thoroughly entertained. Max set Star Trek themed lyrics to some popular songs, and it was very tongue-in-cheek, but fabulous. Look on YouTube and you will see a few videos of their work.

It proved to be a very late night as I was pretty well keyed up from all the excitement. Rest and ready for Day Two – the Grand Poobah of days!

October Update

Hello bloggies. This will more than likely be the last update until December as October and November look to be fairly quiet, that is, at least for now.

Theatre
“Dedicated to the End” wrapped on September 27th. We played to a sold-out crowd on the 26th, but we had a lot more issues and screw-ups that happened in that performance than what we did on the 27th. I’m going to call that opening night jitters. Hell, it was one of the only times we had the full cast at the restaurant. Many thanks to the Forge and Vine Restaurant for putting this production on, for feeding us, and for providing us with gift cards. That’s more than I ever expected and it is greatly appreciated.

The next audition will be in December for “Jesus Christ Superstar.” I’m not sure how the audition will go, but I’m remaining optimistic now that I have two productions under my belt. Not bad for being out of the theatre for 20 years.

Music
My piano was on loan to the Maplewood Barn Theatre for the production of “Camelot.” I was happy to do it, but I am thankful that it’s now back home. I am working on the piano accompaniment for “In Order for Me to Live.” I originally wrote it on with my guitar, and now I’m finally able to branch it out with more voices. “A Minor Sketch” instrumental is also being reworked, adding strings thoughout and a saxophone solo during the bridge. I am also working on a new song called “I Never Knew” – it’s in the early stages of development but I’m thrilled with the progress so far.

I am pushing like crazy to get “Long Hard Road” released in 2011. It’s been in production for over 2 years now, and right now I’m thinking if I just release it with 5 songs on it I’ll be happy. There’s so much music I want to share with you all, but it’s time for me to really focus and share the strongest of my creations.

Website
The website was revamped back in mid-September, and I am about 95% pleased with how it turned out. I still need to do some tweaking, change the background image, and get the photo gallery and store back online, but that may not completely happen until the end of October or by mid November. There are a couple of trips I will be taking within the next couple of months that take precedence over everything else. One is a vacation we had been planning for well over a year, the other is an unscheduled trip to the nation’s capital. Thrillsville.

College
I am in my final term at DeVry for the Associate’s Degree program. I’m still holding onto that 4.0 GPA (by a thread though), but I am thrilled about being able to continue on in the Bachelor’s Degree Program at the end of this month. Companies want to hire web designers with a BS degree, so it’s a smart move to continue my education, despite the fact that I feel a bit burned out.

Well, that’s it bloggies. Have a safe and fun couple of months, and I’ll catch you on the other side.

September Update

Good day to you bloggies! The September Update is going to be pretty brief, so let’s get to it!

Camelot Wrap
Camelot wrapped on Sunday, September 5th. It was a bittersweet ending – although we were all saying that we’re glad this is over, we all formed a very strong bond throughout this entire ordeal from the rehearsals to the near heat-exhaustion, to the final curtain on a chilly Sunday night. These memories I have of this I will always treasure, and I have forged a couple of new-found strong friendships that go well beyond the walls of Camelot.

Dedicated to the End
I am in a fantastic murder-mystery play called “Dedicated to the End” in which I play Doris “Do” Richfield, wife of Senator, soon to be Governor, Stanley Richfield. Performances are set for Sunday, September 26th and Monday, September 27th at Forge & Vine Restaurant in Columbia, MO. Tickets are $35 per individual, or $50 per couple. For reservations, please contact the restaurant at (573) 443-6743. I hope to see you there!

Website Revamp
I am completely redesigning the website to give it a more streamlined, professional look. I should have it up and running this weekend with the exception of the photo gallery (that’s a rather large project in itself). The new site will also include performance videos, audio samples, and possibly a podcast. I’m very thilled with the direction the site is now taking.

DeVry University
I’m will have my Associate’s Degree in Web Design in late October, early November, and then it’s on to the Bachelor’s Degree program in which I will be studying Multimedia Design & Development. Though I am getting pretty burned out on school, I am continuing on because the finish line is not that far away. I have been fortunate to have been named on the Dean’s List every term since I started, and the 4.0 GPA is still intact.

There you have it – short, sweet, and to the point. Until October, be cool!

August Update

Good afternoon bloggies! This will be a brief August update because there’s not a lot going on right now.

Camelot
We are winding down rehearsals for “Camelot” and everything is starting to come together (finally). Even though there’s been a lot of bitching and complaining (I am not without fault here either, and neither is anyone else) it has been a really wonderful experience and I’ve met so many great people whom I probably would never have met otherwise. To update my roles, I am playing Nimue who steals Merlyn’s magic and locks him up for several centuries. In the chorus I am Lady Jane, a lady in waiting in King Arthur’s court, and dance partner of Sir Dinidan (played by my friend Brad). I have two solos in the play, the first as Nimue, and the last as the narrator for the song “Guenevere.”

Next week I, along with fellow actor Ben (who plays Sir Lionel), will be doing a few radio spots at the Cumulus stations here in Columbia, MO to promote “Camelot.” I’ve done television, but have never done radio before so this is going to be a brand new experience for me. Ben’s an absolute hoot, and I think that will make this new venture worthwhile.

“Camelot” opens on Friday, August 20th at 8:00pm at the Maplewood Barn Theatre in Nifong Park. Tickets for adults is $10.00 and children 10 and under get in free. The show will be running the next three consecutive weekends, so you’ve got 9 chances to come see all our hard work come together. Hope to see you there!

Music
I’ve been working on a new song called “I Never Knew.” The song is about the reawakening of the spirit and of the heart. Currently I am working on the lyrics and the melody, but it will be a while before you hear a demo. What I can tell you is that this song mirrors what I have gone through these past few months (as many of my songs do), and I’m using this catharsis to put it down on paper and in music so I can share it with all of you.

School
The Associate’s Degree at DeVry will be winding down next term, and then it’s off to start the Bachelor’s Degree. I can honestly tell you that I am getting severely burned out with college, but I am still maintaining that 4.0 GPA that I’ve worked so hard at to keep. It’s a struggle, but I am showing my daughter that it’s never too late to go after what you want.

Well that’s all for now bloggies, stay tuned as I blog about “Camelot” happenings when we go live next week!

July Update

Good morning bloggies! There’s lots of stuff going on this month, so let’s get right to it.

Last month I auditioned for Camelot and I landed the role of Nimue and Lady Jane. This is my first theatre production since 1990 (yep that’s 20 years) so I am a bit rusty on things. These are small roles that will help me get back into the swing of things, and hopefully I will be able to get bigger roles in the future. Rehearsals are in full swing now, and for the most part they are going pretty smoothly. I do have a lot of “opinions” on some things (mainly the singing), but these opinions of mine I’m going to keep to myself for the time being – the last thing I want to do right now is ruffle feathers.

Something new I am experiencing with Camelot is dancing. I’ve never had to dance on stage ever, so it is a very foreign concept. The first couple of dance rehearsals for “The Lusty Month of May” was quite comical as I could not get my feet to do what they needed to do. Several rehearsals later and I’m doing much better – I have a wonderful dance partner who is just a hoot to hang out with and he’s made it feel less intimidating. I am honestly thankful that there are only two dance sequences in this musical – I don’t think I could handle any more.

If you would like to come to the production of “Camelot” please visit the Maplewood Barn website for tickets and performance information. I will post more on this as time draws near.

The next audition in the wings will be for “Jesus Christ Superstar” at the CEC Theatre in December. I can only imagine at this point how it will go. I don’t know much about this musical – I’ve only seen bits and pieces of it over the years, but this is the first musical I can audition for while I’m in the midst of the Camelot production.

Since things are so hectic with school, work, and rehearsals I have not had any time to commit to writing more music for this now 3-year-old project “Long Hard Road.” At this point I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get this project off the ground. Above all, I want to be proud of this project, of what I’ve accomplished, and I want to be able to deliver to you a high-quality product, but it’s simply not possible right now. I will keep posting updates as they come in, however few and far between they may be. I am working on artwork for the cover of the CD, and will hopefully be able to show you a draft after “Camelot” closes.

Be cool,

~R~

Quite a bit has happened since I posted the first installment of the June update. My cat Ramone was hit and killed on June 12th sometime in the middle of the night. The neighbors found his body and returned it to us. This was not something I wanted to start out my Saturday with, but there you go. It killed me to tell my daughter, but I knew it needed to be done – I am not one of those parents who would tell a child that the cat moved to a farm out in the country or that he ran away. I don’t believe in lying to a child like that. Death is a part of life, and we must take the death, as painful as it is, along with life. It was hard on her, but it was extremely hard on me. You see, Ramone was my cat. I adopted both him and his brother Remo when they were 7 weeks old. Remo took a shining to Zoe, Ramone took a shining to me. So Ramone adopted me as his human, he would cuddle with me, he would sit across my arms as I was typing on the computer. There are times where we would just lock eyes, stare at each other for what seemed like minutes, and then he would tap me on my forehead with his forehead. He did that to me the last night he was alive, it became our thing.

Zoe picked out a lovely spot in the back yard for Ramone’s final resting place, and next spring we will plant flowers there in his honor and his memory. I created a tribute video in honor of Ramone with a compilation of videos I took with my cell phone (videos I had actually forgotten that I took until I was pulling photos off of it). I miss him dearly – what I would give to have him back with me right now…

I auditioned for “Camelot” on June 19th, and got a call not two hours after the audition that they were offering me the role of Lady Nimue and Lady Jane. I immediately and graciously accepted the roles, and I’m very excited about the opportunity to get back upon a stage where I haven’t set foot on in over 20 years. The production is being put on by the Maplewood Barn Theatre and will run 3 weekends starting in August. I will post more details as they arise.

June Update

Hello bloggies (yeah, you’re still stuck with that term of affection). Yes this is the first day of June so that means…

THE JUNE UPDATE!

Lots of things are going on that just happened within the past couple of days with competitions. I will be sending in an audition DVD to the Missouri State Fair for the Missouri State Idol. Once they choose the participants they will compete throughout the duration of the fair, with finals being held on the final day of the fair (August 22nd for those of you who are playing at home). Submissions are due next month and they will notify the lucky participants about a week after that. Once I know something I will post it here, on the website, on Twitter, on Facebook, etc.

America’s Got Talent season 5 started this evening. I thought they would start where the auditions started (i.e. Chicago), but they opted to start in Los Angeles. Much to my dismay, they are going with Dallas tomorrow. I’m not sure yet when they will show the Chicago auditions and whether my daughter and I will get our 15 seconds of National TV fame. Stay tuned…

Off topic, those of you who enjoy the Wil Wheaton (honestly, who doesn’t?), you can follow him on Twitter @wilw, and check him out on the Internet at http://wilwheaton.typepad.com. Stop by and tell him ticketyboo72 sent ya (he won’t have any clue who that is, but it would be fun just to do it *grin*).

DeVry is kicking my ass this term – two huge classes that are very demanding, giant projects, reading, quizzes, etc. I’m still holding on to that obligatory 4.0GPA, but there’s two weeks left in the term so we’ll see if it nose dives. I know, I know, I’ve said that a bunch of times before and I’ve been able to pull it out, but this term is really, really hard. I have two more terms before I get the Associate’s Degree, and then wing right into that Bachelor’s Degree that I’ve been eyeballing for the past year. I’m hoping to have this degree settled by the time I turn 40.

After nearly two months of waiting, sleepless nights, tears and angst, I finally landed a temp job. The job? File Clerk. The location? Non-disclosed. While I can’t tell you where, what I can tell you is that I’m very happy at what I’m doing right now and I haven’t been happy at a job in such a long time (in fact I can’t remember the last time I was happy at my previous job, well except for the day that I quit). Whether I continue on in this job is up to my boss and her bosses and I should know something by this month. I did find out today that they are very happy and pleased with my work (and this is only my second week in – color me giddy).

With that I bid you adieu, and until next time, see y’all ’round bloggies!

~R~

I will be competing at the Pike County Fair Talent Show on Friday, July 30th in Bowling Green, MO. The show starts at 6:00pm and is always a crowd pleaser because it offers so many diverse talents in the area. Entrance into the fair is $15 for adults and $12 for children ages 4-12. For more information on all the happenings, please visit http://www.pikecountyfair.org.
