    DAW, Man!

Entering into the foray of voice acting, I am now saddled with the process of both recording and engineering my auditions. When it comes to editing a track, I am a self-proclaimed genius; however, I am not so great at engineering prowess. Trial and error is both my friend and my nemesis, more on the error, less on the trial.

Recently in recording, I’m finding that even with the EQ and noise gate filters is properly set, the recording still sounds to hot, so the obvious culprit is the gain setting. I will be playing around with this setting for the next few recording sessions. It’s important to get the gain correct while your recording than trying to fix it in post.

    The Journey Begins

Several years back I played with the notion of becoming a voice actor. When I was building and voicing training videos for work I was told several times that I should pursue voice acting. I heard it enough times to seriously consider making the jump.

It’s not like I’m coming into this line of work blindly. I’ve had extensive acting and vocal training over the decades, and have performed in operas, musicals, plays, and radio theatre. I bought the equipment, prepped the room for recording – what could possibly hold me back?

Me. I was holding me back. I made every excuse in the book.

    I don’t have time.

    I don’t have the money.

    I’m not talented enough.

    No one will hire me.

You could say I was suffering from prescription-grade imposter syndrome. It ran so heavy and rampant in my mind that it stopped me before I even began, and I lost several years of pursuing this as a full-time career.

Fast-forward to October, 2024, I finally made the decision to follow the path of the voice actor. Why? Because I’m tired of not doing the things that I love. Am I still doubting myself? Of course, but you know what? I’m not letting that stop me anymore.

What am I looking for as far as work goes? Currently I’m looking into more Corporate jobs – voicing training videos, presentations and the like. Later on down the line I would love to try my hand at animation.

Alright, let’s see where this goes.
